The History

“Sometimes all that's needed is a little space and someone willing to believe in you.”

Mr. Smith was a local grocery store owner. Mr. Ballard was a barber. Despite no obvious connection, these two would be linked forever.

As a young man, Mr. Ballard was looking for a place to start his barber business. He had the talent and the drive, but no place to work from. He asked Mr. Smith if he could use the storage room in the back of the grocery store to set up a small barbershop.

Mr. Smith said yes.

The two of them cleaned out the space together, poured concrete, and got it ready by hand so Mr. Ballard could open his doors. It wasn't fancy, but it was enough to get started. After a while, Mr. Ballard moved next door into a space of his own and eventually became known as the main barber in Belmont. Generations of people sat in his chair over the years, but he never forgot the man who made room for him in the beginning.

It's a simple story, but one that set the stage for the hospitality, hard work, and generosity that defines the Smith & Ballard brand.
